At some point, you probably visited designingforanalytics.com if you're on my mailing list, and you might have read a cast study about one of my startup clients, Apptopia.com. Apptopia hired me to help them turn a suffering marketplace business into a thriving mobile app intelligence platform based on analytics. If you aren't familiar with this company, Apptopia helps mobile app publishers and investors learn about the downloads, revenues, and SDKs of competitor mobile apps. The trick was figuring out how to make all this data useful to app publishers and investors, and so we embarked on a design project to do just that.
I was excited to hear in a November 2016 TechCrunch article that Apptopia has raised a $2.7M second seed round led by Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary, after showing monthly recurring revenue of $280,000. When Apptopia pivoted to app intelligence in June 2015, they had no revenue. However, “within 60 days, we were at $30K MRR [monthly recurring revenue]. Within 120 days, we were at $70,000 MRR. And today, we’ve quadrupled that…it’s been a wild ride,” says CEO Eliran Sapir.
My old client Eliran got one other thing right in his quote too. He realized how important it is to turn data into actionable information:
“The focus for us is not just about showcasing the data and making it accessible, it’s also about helping people make decisions.”
